Made famous by the Roosevelt Hotel, New Orleans in 1949


  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 dash Peychaud bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 1 1/2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 1 dash Herbsaint or absinthe substitute
  • 1 twist lemon peel


  1. Pack a 3 1/2 oz. Old Fashioned glass with crush ice
  2. In another glass blend sugar, bitters, and rye whiskey until sugar is dissolved
  3. Add a cube or two of ice and stir
  4. Empty ice from first glass and drop in a dash of Herbsaint
  5. Twirl glass to coat the inside and pour any remaining liquid out
  6. Pour the blended cocktail into this glass
  7. Twish lemon peel over cocktail, but don\’t drop it into the glass
