Old time recipe known as French Toast (if you are not from South Louisiana).  My grandmother and mother used to fix this on Saturday or Sunday mornings.  Delicous!


  • 3 large eggs, well beaten
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp allspice
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 8 stale slices regular or even better, French bread
  • 1/3 cup cooking oil
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  1. Into a large mixing bowl, cream eggs and sugar; add cinnamon and next 5 ingredients; blend until well mixed
  2. Slowly beat in the milk with whisk until all the milk is used
  3. Place slices of bread into bowl, one at a time, and let bread sok up the mixture on each side
  4. Heat cooking oil in large, heavy skillet over medium-low heat until hot
  5. Fry each slice until it has browned nicely on each side; serve warm sprinkled with powdered sugar
